From the days of working as a volunteer on Ted Kennedy's 1962 campaign for the Senate to the spring of 1971, when Senator Kennedy left his Washington, D.C. office and came outside to sit on the grass and talk to him and other veterans home from Vietnam and determined to stop a failed war, John Kerry found inspiration and a mentor in the senator who became the Lion of the Senate. As a legislative team, the two men kept their focus on what was best for their beloved state of Massachusetts while never ceasing in their efforts to make life better for all Americans. They shared the joy, pain and unique lessons of running for the Presidency of the United States, a country they loved and honored and dared to dream great dreams for. Accepting the end of that goal, both men moved on, unbowed, with their work back in the Senate. Kennedy and Kerry shared a Catholic faith and strong upbringing that dedicated them to a life of public service. They also shared a love of family, MA sports teams and a good joke that brightened their friendship and the friendship of their families with light, loyalty and laughter.
John Kerry found a mentor and brother in political arms in Ted Kennedy. He and Teresa Heinz Kerry were able to show their friendship over the past year since the cancer diagnosis, quietly supporting and tending to their friends Ted and Vicki Kennedy. A lifetime of shared dreams, jokes and political passion is in John Kerry's voice as he speaks of his friend in this clip, borrowed, with thanks, from
